Decided Today

Present: Renee, Frances, Rose, Russell, Alvin, Sheldon, Kathy, Autrey Ben (by phone), Valerie, Michael, Joe, Linda, Sheldon.

Shared SULS Memorabilia: Folks brought pictures and memorabilia to scan and have pictures taken with document cam.

Reunion Venue: The Valdry Center, on the SU campus, which was not available before has become available. The sub committee looked into it and asked the group if they'd like to go back to that choice instead of the BREC center. Sheldon suggested we look for other venue and Renee agreed to report back on another venue by Friday. We'll have another Zoom set up to vote. Meanwhile the group voted to put a refundable deposit on the Valdry Center so the spot won't be lost in case it is the choice of the entire group. The link/invitation for the Zoom meeting is posted below.

Russell listed pros and cons of the 2 veunues discussed. Limitations for the BREC were that we would have to pay for the hour before to set up and the hour after for cleanup which would leave our time to party to about 2 hours having to be out of the facility at 9:00PM. We'd also have to bring our own AV equipment. We'd also pay more to decorate. The Valdry is set up for glam events and barely needs decorating. We can set up as early as 4:00 PM and not pay extra or for the time we spend decorating. We can stay later. Tables are larger. AV is set up-- no need to bring anything but a flashdrive. It's on campus. We can take pictures at the school across the way. For our 50th--a once in a life deal--we should go out for an extra nice place and use a BREC center for another reunion. But, wait, there's more!!!

Members who have Facebook accounts were reminded to join our new Facebook Group as the other cannot be managed for all features. Click here to join Southern University  Class of 1973 on Facebook.

Reunion Fees: The group decided that the entire reunion would cost $350 per classmate. Classmates who have not paid any dues can pay $175 to attend the reunion by June 10 and a final $175 by July 10. The fees are for the entire weekend whether or not a member decides to stay for certain activities.

It was explained that the main reunion was Friday and Thursday was a day for those who wanted or needed to arrive early. The only activities were to be sponsored by the committee who would come out-of-pocket for refreshments and entertainment in the conference room as a gift for the early arrivers. The conference room is free with 10 rooms.

Official reunion kick-off is Friday with a brunch/class meeting to discuss

  • class trip
  • class cruise
  • prayer/devotional for deceased classmates
  • SULS Legacy
  • finances
  • other class business
  • and to have fun
Saturday night is the big event with dinner, dancing, class video, souvenirs. Daytime is on your own. Val suggested a picnic or some other family activity for those who desired to bring grandchildren.

Sunday-- church service at a church pastored by a schoolmate/depart for places of abode.

Finances discussed in terms of having a 3rd signature for the bank account. Our two professionals in law--Alvin and Michael-- agreed that 2 signatures of Anthony Beasley and Sheldon Johnson were acceptable and the management of it in its present form looks good. Having this established and clarified will possibly be incentive to get classmates who are not paying but questioning to become involved in paying dues and participating in the reunion.  Inquiries should be directed to Mr. Beasley or Sheldon Johnson.

Concern was expressed about people who have not paid dues but still come to tailgates and receive bereavement gifts. Suppose they want to attend the reunion? Decision: See Reunion Fees highlighted above. Suppose a classmate has paid dues of less than $350? Answer: They must bring their dues up to $350 if they intend to come to the reunion. Last day to pay to attend the reunion will be July 10.

Below is the invitation for the Zoom meeting for next Friday to present another venue and vote on a venue.
